WordPress Stats
Many WordPress centric businesses rely on w3techs.com stats to evaluate the amount of WordPress sites in the world and to estimate it’s market share. There are many other companies that collect data on various types of technologies used for building and running websites, but w3techs is definitely the most quoted service.
Many posts where written about the accuracy of the the data, and many comparisons made with other resources. We don’t argue with the numbers, on the contrary, we use the data for our needs. And one last thing about w3techs, its the only service that publishes historical stats.
Our Forecast
Base on w3techs yearly data from the last five years, we have generated our own prediction for the next five years. Those predictions made at the beginning of the year for our internal use, and we want to share some of them with our readers.
In the first half on this decade, WordPress market share growth was phenomenal, from 13.1% of all the websites in the world to 23.3%. It’s a 78% growth!
Our predictions indicate that by the end on the decade, WordPress will continue dominating the CMS industry, growing by extra 50%! We predict that by the end of 2020, approximately 35% of the websites in the world will use WordPress!
From quarter of the web today, to a third of the web in just five years.
International Growth
With Matt’s internationalization vision, more non-English websites will adopt WordPress. WordPress core already supports dozens of languages, but the new plugin/theme community translation mechanism should increase the WordPress adoption rate in the international markets as well.
Back in 2013, hosting companies reported that 25% of all new clients in USA use WordPress. In 2015, according to w3tech, 34.7% of all English language websites use WordPress.
What should you do about it?
To summarize we know that its safe to expect that more websites will adopt WordPress as a CMS of choice. We also believe that significant portion of the growth will come from the international (non-English) markets.
